Preparing for the CSE exam is definitely stressful especially for those who have been working for a long time already and have completely forgotten everything they learned in elementary and high school. Because of technology, we have been too dependent on calculators that we don’t even remember how to add, subtract, multiply or divide decimals. Most people cannot find the time to read after working an 8-hour job. This article will help you study effectively in preparation for the exam.
I have listed the things that you need to do before and during the exam that will greatly improve your chances of passing the exam.
Don’t procrastinate and wait until the deadline. Many aspiring applicants bought numerous reviewers without even bothering to check the deadline of application. Applying for the exam is always the FIRST step in preparing. Check out the schedule of application and exam date at the CSC website.
A diagnostic exam pinpoints your test-taking strengths and weaknesses, so you can structure your test preparations effectively. After taking the diagnostic exam, review your performance by asking yourself these questions:
1. Did you feel anxious at any point during the exam?
2. Were you able to complete each section within the allotted time? Looking back, were there certain questions that were excessively time-consuming?
3. How did you react if/when you realized you were behind on time?
4. What types of questions seemed straightforward to you?
Once you’ve contemplated these questions, consolidate your findings into your strongest and weakest areas. This will allow you to identify types of questions that should give you a confidence boost, as well as those worth studying. Also, if timing or anxiety was an issue, you can make a plan to address these concerns as you continue practicing. Lastly, if you think that you have major weaknesses or anxiety, consider contacting a tutor or a review center to help you successfully sail through the rest of your preparations.
The famous American author John Maxwell said:
“You’ll never change your life until you change something you do daily. The secret of your success is found in your daily routine.”
You have to add preparing for the exam in your daily routine.
Spend at least 30 minutes solving problems in math. Spend another 30 minutes in reading articles/novel to improve your vocabulary and reading comprehension skills. If you study three months before the exam, this means having 90 hours of review for preparation.
The Pomodoro technique can help you with that. This technique simply involves choosing a task and working on it for 25 minutes straight (yes, without distractions like your mobile phones, etc.), taking a 5-minute break and repeating the cycle. Watch this video to understand it fully how it works.
You may access our online course here for FREE. This online course has a series of lectures and quizzes at the end to measure your understanding of the material. Try it out NOW!
You may also watch this video to help you study even if you do not feel like it.
Since calculators are not allowed during the test, it is very important that you memorize your multiplication table. You will not be able to divide, nor perform any operations on fractions and decimals if haven’t memorized it.
When using online reviewers, do not memorize the answers to the questions for we do not know if the same question will appear on the exam itself. These questions are there to train your mind to think. Remember that your brain is a muscle and it needs constant training to strengthen it. Analyze the questions carefully and if you got the wrong answer, make sure you understand why you were wrong. If you do not understand it, try to find a tutor or a review center that can help you.
According to a study, practice testing is the most effective way of studying. You can do practice testing through review quizzes online. Testing yourself works because you have to make the effort to pull information from your memory — something we don’t do when we merely review our notes or reread something. However, note that this has the assumption that you already read something beforehand. Doing lots of practice without prior reading will not help you since you do not have the necessary information that you need to answer the questions. If you will look at our online course, each section is composed of a lecture (for you to read) and a quiz so that you can test yourself if you were able to apply the concepts that were taught.
When taking a practice test or just studying, preparing, put yourself in a place where you can maintain mindful focus for an extended time. Do not study or take your tests on your bed. Your bed is a place for sleep, not study. When you recline, your brain becomes less alert. You can’t study well if one part of your brain is sending sleep signals to the other parts! Instead, sit in a quiet area. Sit in an upright chair at a table or desk with good lighting. This makes it easier for your brain to absorb new
information and solve new problems.
According to studies, cramming contributes significantly to testing anxiety, which can make you perform poorly on the test. Worse, it may lead to mental block. Most Filipinos have this notion that if we study right before the an exam, we will be able to remember it more since it is still fresh from our memory. That is certainly NOT TRUE.
Here is a detailed list of reasons why you should not cram:
a. Spacing Effect
The spacing effect says that given the same amount of time studied, or the same number of exposures to material, those spread out in time will be remembered better, at longer intervals, than if those same exposures are crammed together.
In other words, if you have ten hours to study, you’ll retain more if they are spread one hour per day over ten days, than if you study ten hours straight.
Spreading out the number of hours of studying leads to storing the information in long-term memory instead of storing it in our short-term memory (which is what happens when we cram).
b. Less Information Stored
When you study long hours straight, you get tired and this decreases your ability to absorb further information.
Although we know that cramming is not good, why do we still do it anyway? The reason is PROCRASTINATION. If you start doing whatever you need to do, you do not have to cram. The video below can help you stop procrastinating.
There are two great reasons to combine a regimen of vigorous physical exercise with your preparation for the CSE.
Those who are in good physical shape can focus longer and think faster than those who don’t exercise.
When you are training to run a race like a marathon, for instance, you learn quickly that consistency pays off. Getting out there every day and logging miles is critical. Similarly, consistency pays off in CSE prep. If you set aside only one day a week to do your work, you won’t see nearly as much benefit as if you had spread it out over the week. Also, physical training teaches you to listen to your body; you learn when it’s okay to push yourself hard, and when you need to ease up. Similarly, good training teaches you to listen to your mind; you learn which problems you can tackle easily, which are challenging but manageable, and which ones to skip. This will help you enormously on test day.
Here are some tips that you can do to train your body:
You can find a lot of these techniques here.
You will find it much easier to read when your book is facing you directly, rather than at an angle.
As an exercise, try to read both ways. You will notice that your brain has to work harder to process the
words when the book is at an angle. Don’t make things harder than they need to be.
Again, this is from the Pomodoro technique. Whenever you begin to feel fatigued from studying,
take a five-minute break. But be strict—don’t let your break get out of hand. Five minutes is enough time to get a snack or use the bathroom but not long enough to do much else. Don’t take a break to watch your favorite show; you can do that after your study hour is done. But a good short break can provide a great energy boost in the midst of your studying.
Don’t think that your brain will work just fine even if you neglect its basic needs. Here are some things you should remember during the days of your preparation.
The night before the CSE, your studying should all be behind you; cramming at this point will probably do more harm than good. Relax, go see a movie, grab dinner with your friends, do whatever you need to do to reward your brain for its efforts over the previous months. As long as you get a good night’s rest, you’re allowed to have some fun the evening before the exam. However, make sure that you still get enough sleep. For a truly peaceful slumber, lay out everything you need for test day the night before.
The night before the test, lay out everything you will need for the test on your bed.
Eat a good breakfast before the exam, with protein to give your brain the energy it will need. Oatmeal is
a good option, or eggs and bacon. Make sure that you have enough food to sustain you during the exam but don’t overeat also! Overeating can cause reduce brain function. Try to stay away also from too much sugar.
Wear clothes that will keep you comfortable. Bring a light coat or jacket in case you get cold. However, take note that following are not allowed: sleeveless shirt/blouse, short pants, or slippers.
If you will be taking the CSE at an unfamiliar test site, make sure to get directions to the site well
ahead of time. Go to the testing site days before the exam before the test, so you can familiarize yourself with it. Leave yourself plenty of time to get to the test site 1 hour earlier so that you don’t stress out if you hit traffic (especially if you would have to pass through EDSA). Testing sites will be open at 6:00 am.
You do not want to have a mental block on this day so you’d better relax. You can say a simple prayer or do some positive talk. You may also have some deep breathing to set your mind and body to relax. You can even chat with your roommates (if they seem friendly) just to get your mind out of worry state.
If you have no idea as to how to answer a question take note of that item, skip it on your answer sheet and come back to it later. If you return to the problem 10 or 15 minutes later, your refreshed brain may well see things more clearly and find a simple way to solve the problem! If you still do not know the answer, guess. You have a 25% chance of getting the correct answer anyway compared with the 0% chance if you leave it unanswered.
Don’t go so fast and excited that you answer the wrong question when doing a math problem. Always re-read the question to make sure you are giving the answer to the question it asks!
Preparing for the civil service exam would really entail months of preparation. Although there is no magic formula for you to pass, these tips would definitely help you along the way.
Here is an infographic that summarizes what was covered in this blog post. Enjoy!
Did you know that over the years, only 11% of the total number of applicants pass the exam? This means that ONLY ONE out of 10 successfully make it? Although it may be true that you can do self-study, here are the reasons why enrolling in a review class can be beneficial.
Let’s face it. Studying at the end of a hard day’s work is no easy task. Assuming that you wake up at 5 am, prepare for one hour, endure two agonizing hours along EDSA to go to your office, work for eight hours and spend another two hours to get home, you no longer have the strength at the end of the day. There are also dishes to be done, clothes to be washed, homework that kids need help with and the list just goes on and on. If you still can study after doing all of those tasks, good for you. But for most people, they just do not have the capacity to do it anymore.
Some might say that they can study on their own on weekends. You can also do that but there are a lot of distractions when we stay at home. There’s TV, Facebook, kids demanding attention, or you probably just want to sleep all day and take that much needed rest. Enrolling in a review class will really make you allot time for studying without distraction because you have nothing to do there EXCEPT to study. Enrolling in a class similar to those who enroll in a gym so that they get that discipline to exercise. They already paid for it and they don’t want to waste that money if they don’t go. Same thing goes for you. If you already paid for the review class, you will be forced to attend the classes since you don’t want to waste your money, do you?
You may opt to buy review materials from the bookstore. But sometimes, these books provide only the answers but not the detailed explanation as to how to solve the problems. Although some books have these explanation, some of the readers have difficulty comprehending what is written on the material. A review class will give you an opportunity to ask your instructor and clarify the things that you understand. You can also benefit from the tips and shortcuts that the instructor will give on the review sessions.
As was mentioned earlier, only 11% of the applicants pass the exam. No one really knows as to why they have this trend. Some claim that there are only limited positions for regular positions so CSC limits the passers. Whether this is true or not, we do not really know. What this means for you is that you should be in the top 11% of the takers. This is similar to those who take the entrance exams for universities. For example, if a certain university has only 2000 slots available for their freshmen, they will rank the results from 1 – 2000. If you do not belong in that list, then you do not qualify. You really have to study and work hard for you to get to the top of the list.
Finding a good review center will be extremely beneficial for if you will be taking the civil service exam. It will instill discipline, provide guidance and equip you with the right skills that you will be need to succeed.
For parents of most graduating elementary students, this is the time of the year to inquire of the application process for high school entrance exams. Here are the important things you need to know about the Civil Service Exam.
A: Passers of the CSE are entitled to permanent positions. This means that they have the usual benefits like SSS, Pag-ibig, Philheath, holiday pay, etc. (Nonpermanent or job order employees do not enjoy these benefits.
A: Those with Subprofessional Eligibility are qualified to enter the first level of government service while those with Professional Eligibility may join the second level.
The first level positions involve non-professional work that does not require four years of college studies. The second level involve professional, technical, or scientific work requiring at least four years of college studies. When it comes to salary and promotion, the first level positions are only entitled up to Salary Grade 10 whereas the second level positions are entitled to positions with Salary Grade 11 and above as long as they meet the requirements for that given position (i.e. education, experience, seminars attended, etc. ). See the salary grade level for 2019. here. If you see yourself retiring as a government employee, it is better that you take the professional exam.
A: Yes you may. Educational attainment is not a requirement for taking the CS Exam. However, if you wish to apply for a higher position, a college degree may be a requirement.
A: All applicants must strictly meet the following qualification requirements:
MANILA, Philippines – The college entrance test season (UPCAT, ACET, DCAT, USTET) is fast approaching, and many of you are spending the next few days cramming everything in. Some have enrolled in review classes, while others have relied on a host of review materials available online or in bookstores. Still, a few may have been confident enough to just come to their testing centers and hope to wing it. Regardless of your preparation, here are eight things you should do during the test.
1. Keep track of your time and pacing.
Bring a watch. Keep in mind the time allotted for a particular segment of the exam, and when you are supposed to end or move on to the next segment. Note the time when the exam commenced, or use a stopwatch counting down to zero.
2. Read the questions or directions thoroughly before looking at the options.
Words or phrases, at times in capital letters, such as EXCEPT, LEAST LIKELY, or MOST PROBABLY, should be notice enough for you to carefully consider the possible answers. More often than not, the way the question or direction is phrased is as equally challenging as the actual answer itself.
3. Choose answers based only on the information given in the question, and not on what you already know.
You think you know, for example, that the effects of climate change can be catastrophic based on stored knowledge, but the passage only talks about how they can be unpredictable. This means that even if what you know is correct, it may not necessarily be what the question asks for, or what the text discusses. Basing your answer solely on previous knowledge can be, well, catastrophic to your test scores.
4. Don’t change your answers on a whim.
Often, you choose an answer and then change your mind a few moments after, at times at whim or for reasons that are unreasonable, like realizing you’ve chosen too many As or Bs on your answer sheet. Often still, however, the original answer is actually the correct answer. But if you really feel that you’ve made a mistake, by all means completely erase your previous mark, and make sure that your new answer is clearly distinguishable.
5. Do not let difficult questions bog you down.
Of course it is best if you’re able to answer each question in the test. Remember, however, that your goal is to get as many correct answers as possible. Move on to the next if an item is too difficult or time-consuming. More often than not, there will be questions you will find too easy, allowing you to save time which you can use to go back to the items you have skipped.
6. Use process of elimination.
If you are really unable to answer an item or even understand what the question is asking, try eliminating the option or options that are least likely to be the correct answer. This method increases your chance of choosing the right answer, even as it can be time-consuming. When you have eliminated at least one of the options, make an educated guess.
7. Do not make any stray marks on the answer sheets.
If the test is going to be scored by a computer, the program will not be able to differentiate between your answer and a stray mark. Two answers in a question will thus be marked wrong. If the test is going to be scored by an actual human being, stray marks may in extreme cases be construed as an attempt on your part to identify yourself to the checker and may thus be classified as a form of cheating.
8. Do not despair.
And we mean this before, during, and after the test. Despairing before the exam imperils your efforts at preparing; during the exam, it negatively impacts your critical thinking skills; and after, it is simply futile. Some exams, like the UP College Admission Test, takes into consideration not only your test scores but your high school grades as well. So even if you feel you did miserably on the exam, there still is, and will always be, hope for you to get into your college or university of choice.

In today’s age, being a jack of all trades doesn’t put you above your group or peer anymore. We are now in the segmented world, where people are now recognized based on their in-depth knowledge on their respective fields. So being good in all subjects won’t necessarily put you on the top of the class, but being great on either Math or English would definitely make you the best on that particular subject where you are the leading student.
This trend gave birth to Math Hub Tutorial and Review Center. A specialized tutorial session where you can choose as to which subject or field you want to be well-informed about—it would be as if you are a scholar on a specific field upon finishing a class. Math Hub tailored-fit each session depending on the need of the student who would take the class, and on the level of expectations that the protégé aims to gain.
For example, if you want to be a mathematician, the tutorial center would assess your knowledge about it and put together a math tutorial that would specifically address your needs to achieve your desired result. The instructor would also deliver the lesson in such a way that you can get the full grasp of the lecture much quickly.
The lessons vary from school subjects like Math, Science, English, etc., to review you about the college entrance exam of your preferred university like UP, Ateneo and La Salle or to help you advance your career by helping you pass the civil service exam. It all depends on the field that you would like them to focus on.
Math Hub’s tutorial programs , could come in group, or one-on-one tutorial session again, depending on your needs and preferences. If you would like to work in a group where you can cultivate camaraderie among the people with the same needs as yours, you may enroll in a group session. However, if you are the shy-type and you’d like the lesson to cater on your specific needs, one-on-one session is for you.
The world is fast innovating and if you want to rise on the top, it’s not enough to know the basics of everything, you must have a thorough knowledge on a particular subject or field wherein you’re so good at it, your name would be incorporated with it.
